Ferrari has expanded its family with the new 296 GTS, an open-top version of the 296 GTB and Maranello’s latest evolution of the mid-rear-engined two-seater Berlinetta spider. However, the GTS isn’t just as powerful but even more aesthetically pleasing as it offers a true hybrid Italian supercar spirit thanks to its retractable roof, while retaining the 250 LM inspired design.
Here are ten interesting facts about the new PHEV V6-powered Ferrari 296 GTS:
The new 296 GTS is the convertible version of the 296 GTB, and is Ferrari’s fourth plug-in hybrid model alongside the SF90 Stradale, its convertible version, called SF90 Spider, and last summer’s 296 GTB.
The 296 GTS is fitted with a retractable hard top, and stows under a tonneau cover ahead of the engine, without affecting the balance of the overall design.
The Ferrari Design Center led by Flavio Manzoni carried out a subtle revision to accommodate the roof opening. The rear deck has been reworked, with redesigned buttresses and the incorporation of a signature ‘aero bridge’ as well as a new window at the bottom of the engine cover.
The cabin and the rear deck are separated by an adjustable glass rear screen to ensure cabin comfort at high speeds with the roof down.
There is still an active rear spoiler stowed in the tail, which maximizes downforce at high speed.
Ferrari says the roof takes 14 seconds to go down or up and can be done on the move at speeds of up to 28mph.
The model is equipped with the latest 654 hp V6 turbo engine from the 296 GTB, combined with an electric motor capable of delivering an additional 165 hp, and traveling up to 15 miles in its EV mode thanks to a 7.45kWh battery pack. The engine unleashes a total of 819 hp, and feeds power to the rear wheels via the 8-speed DCT and E-Diff.
Performance remains identical to the 296 GTB despite weighing 70kg more. That means the 296 GTS will hit 62 mph in 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 205 mph.
The only major changes to the interior are new seat options and the addition of a cover to the storage compartment in the center console.
The 296 GTS is also available with the Assetto Fiorano package, which adds Multimatic adjustable shock absorbers, more carbon fibre elements, and various weight-saving measures, along with stickier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires.
Ferrari didn't release any pricing information, but expect it to be about $30,000 higher than the 296 GTB's $320,000 price tag. The new 296 GTS isn't the only model we expect to see this year, as Ferrari is set to introduce its Purosangue SUV.
